The much anticipated restaurant is due to open in a matter of weeks
A hotly-anticipated restaurant is planning to add a larger outdoor eating area when it finally opens in Preston City Centre.
Mowgli Street Food is due to open next month in Miller Arcade once a radical transformation of the former French Connection store has been completed. The chain specialises in authentic Indian food based on dishes actually eaten at homes and on the streets.
A planning application for an external dining area was submitted in May only to be quickly withdrawn. However, it was not the end of the plans with the owners instead widening their ambitions to create a bigger offering. The now dropped application covered a dining area consisting of 22 seats, seven tables, moveable parasols, café barriers, moveable pyramid gas patio heaters and a bussers/waiter station.
A spokesperson told LancsLive: “We are resubmitting our licence application for a slightly larger area, which should give us a little more outdoor seating. It won’t impact our opening date.”
The eatery is the brainchild of Nisha Katona, from Ormskirk, and already has established sites up and down the country including in Manchester and Liverpool. Bringing a branch to Preston has been highly anticipated for years, but the process was not straightforward as it had first been expected after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK.
Nisha revealed in September 2021 that she had signed a lease to open in Preston, which she described as “a town that is so close to my heart”. Mowgli’s life began back in 2014 when Nisha, following her passion wanted to open an Indian restaurant that deviated from British stereotypes of curry inspired her to follow her dreams.
She quit her 20-year career as a barrister and worked hard to set-up the first Mowgli restaurant in Liverpool before establishing the Manchester Branch a year later. In 2018 Mowgli was awarded a placement in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list with Nisha being recognised with an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours list for services to the Food Industry.
The Preston restaurant is due to open for the first time on July 11.
