Flame-grilled chicken chain Nando’s has brought back its “hottest ever” spice to the menu. The casual dining giant, which has restaurants at several locations in Lancashire including PrestonBlackpoolLancaster and Blackburn, has turned up the heat with the Vusa XX Hot sauce.

The spice, which originated in South Africa and Zula Vusa translates to ‘excitement and fire’, is even hotter than the ‘extra hot’ level on the PERI-ometer available to diners. Customers can try the Vusa XX Hot on a range of dishes on the menu, including wings and wraps, but it is only available for a limited time.

Diners confident they can take the heat will be asked to accept a liability waiver. The amusing waiver certificate, which also includes space for a signature, date and “emergency contact”, reads: “I certify I’m fully aware it’s fiery, fierce and has earned its rightful place at the top of the PERi-ometer. I’ll enjoy the legendary taste, hot sweats and bragging rights – because every mouthful’s a madness.

“After consideration, I waive my rights to complain about any spicy side effects, including but not limited to, streaming eyes and panting in front of my mates (or date). As a safety precaution, I confirm I know where to find the Bottomless Froyo machine.

“I’m also aware it’s limited edition and agree to keep my cool on socials when it’s no longer available.”

It signs off the firmly tongue-in-cheek waiver with “don’t say we didn’t warn you”. The new spice is available from January 4.

Nando’s has also introduced the spiced chickpea recipe to its menus for 2023, which is available in a wrap or pitta. The recipe combines a chickpea and spinach patty with humous, pink pickled onions, smoky red pepper chutney and lettuce. Lancaster-based fans of the chain were delighted when a venue finally opened in the city last June.
