We can’t quite believe we are telling you this, but Lancashire curry houses have somehow missed out in the British Curry Awards 2022.

Family-run Buraq Restaurant in Kirkham and Blackpool’s street food eatery Twisted Indian, have been snubbed in the London ceremony in favour of Liverpool’s Mowgli Street Food in the Best Restaurant North West category. While Blackpool-based East4West, has missed out in the Best Takeaway category.

However, Lancashire can take a sliver of joy in the fact that we also have a Mowgli, with Nisha Katona’s wild-popular Asian street food chain finally arriving to Preston in summer.

The awards, known as the ‘The Curry Oscars’, recognise the country’s top curry restaurants in a number of categories, including regional winners, Best Newcomer, Personality of the Year, Best Takeaway and for the first time, the Diners’ Choice, which was voted for on the night by the public. It is one of the most prestigious events in the culinary calendar and is somewhat a national insinuation, with the 2022 ceremony, held in Evolution at Battersea Park, attended by a number of big names in food, drink, sport and TV.

The glittering event, which was sponsored by Just Eat, was presented by comedian Hugh Dennis. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who used to work in a curry house, also sent a video message of support to the night’s nominees.

Do you think our Lancashire curry restaurants were robbed or is your favourite not even short-listed? let us know in the comments.

“The thing I’ve learnt about being Prime Minister is that the best training I ever had was working in a curry house,2 The Prime Minister said. “I know how hard every one of you works from the chefs to the waiters to the restaurant managers and the delivery drivers.

“And that experience gave me a huge appreciation of business, of the importance of treating people fairly and the value of this most iconic of British Asian industries. So I’m delighted to be supporting Britain’s ‘Curry Oscars’.

“I want to thank all of you for everything you do to fill our high streets and our homes with some of the best curry in the world.”

Special guests included Chris Tarrant, Nadia Esse, Dr Ranj Singh, Merlin Griffiths from Channel 4’s First Dates, [presenter Hayley Sparkes, Danielle Mason, Saira Khan, actors James Cosmo and Nina Wadia, former England footballer David Seaman, ex-England cricketer Phil Tuffnell, reality TV star, Farah Sattaur; The Apprentice contestant Nick Showering and MP Chris Grayling.

The winners were chosen from the regional nominee shortlists, which are selected by customers asked to nominate their favourite restaurant and takeaways, and the final winners are decided by an expert panel of judges.

Buraq, which was Founded in 2005, is a family run restaurant that continues to serve loyal diners, producing high quality food and flavours, with high customer satisfaction ratings on Goggle, TripAdvisor and restaurant Guru. Twisted Indian on Clifton Street in the heart of the seaside resort, offers their own take on the traditional curry, serving dishes in a modern, street food-style.

“We are Twisted Indian Street Food where traditional meets modern, where global meets desi and where being twisted is absolutely normal, they added, before going on to explain their name: “The vision behind the name is to showcase the wide variety of flavours and what can be made out of them with a bit of creativity. Why? Because normal is boring.”

East4west operates as both a sit-in restaurant and takeaway and boasts a 4.3 star rating on Google and 4.7 on TripAdvisor. One recent five-star review said: “We enjoyed the food, it was tasty and hot…the staff were very attentive and efficient…the owner was fantastic and made us feel so welcome… We will definitely return, while another said: “Must visit.. highly recommended… Best Dining in Blackpool area. Staff are well train to deal any demands.”
